More than two thirds of gross value added are generated by services (trade, accommodation and transport activities); most of it was generated by activities in the Port of Koper and the seaside and spa tourism. The Obalno-kraška region recorded almost a quarter of all tourist nights in the country in 2013; slightly less than half by domestic tourists. As regards foreign tourists, Italians, Austrians and Germans predominated.

The Obalno-kraška region was in 2012 one of the four regions that recorded a positive annual population growth rate. It was 8.1‰. However, the age structure of the population was less favourable. In mid-2013 the ageing index was 133.3, which means that for 100 inhabitants younger than 15 years there were 133 inhabitants aged 65 or more.

Agricultural holdings in this region are among the smallest in Slovenia as regards average utilised agricultural area per agricultural holding and as regards the number of livestock on agricultural holdings.
