Goriška Region

This statistical region lies at the far west of Slovenia along the border with Italy. The Julian Alps, the Soča River and the fertile Vipava valley are the most prominent natural features of this region.

This statistical region lies at the far west of Slovenia along the border with Italy. The Julian Alps, the Soča River and the fertile Vipava valley are the most prominent natural features of this region.

Although it contributed less than 6% to total national GDP in 2010, in terms of GDP per capita it ranked third in the country. Earnings of persons employed by enterprises were also third in the country in 2011, but were under the national average. In 2010, disposable income per capita in Goriška as well as in Osrednjeslovenska exceeded EUR 11,000. This region had the highest rate of people working part-time due to parenthood and the highest rate of fathers who were beneficiaries of father’s compensation and paternity leave. As life expectancy is the highest in Slovenia, the share of people aged 65 or more is also the highest. In 2011 the share of old people in Goriška was already 17.9%. The share of children aged 0-14 was 13.9%. In Goriška 73% of children aged 1-5 years attended kindergartens, while on average 142 pupils attended elementary schools, i.e. 115 fewer than in the Osrednjeslovenska region. According to the enrolment in tertiary programs among persons in the age group 19-26 years Goriška was first in the country with two thirds of persons aged 19-26 being students.
