The region of high mountains, including the symbol of Slovenia, Triglav, is almost entirely Alpine. A large part of this statistical region is protected as a national park.

The relief and climate are good bases for tourism. In 2010, Gorenjska recorded almost 18% of tourist overnights in Slovenia, of which 70% by foreign tourists. As regards the number of beds per 1,000 population, Gorenjska ranked second in Slovenia even though it still had half fewer beds than the Obalno-kraška region.

Although agriculture in this region is not among the most important activities, agricultural holdings are among the largest in the country both in terms of average utilised agricultural area and in terms of the number of livestock units. Population indicators indicate a favourable situation.

In 2010 Gorenjska ranked among the three regions with natural increase over the national average. The share of young people was among the highest in the country (15.1%). At the beginning of 2011 three out of four families in Gorenjska had children. The average family with children had 1.65 children. Among families, married couples prevailed (65%), while unmarried couples comprised 10% and lone parent families around 25% of families. In 2010, only 8.1% of the labour force was unemployed and only 2.7% of unemployed persons spent more than one year to get a job.
