The term "globalisation" has been widely used to describe the increasing internationalisation of markets for goods and services, the financial system, corporations and industries, technology and competition.
Three major forces have contributed importantly to the globalisation process:
-
The liberalisation of capital movements and deregulation, of financial services in particular,
-
The further opening of markets to trade and investment, spurring the growth of international competition, and
-
The key role played by information and communication technologies (ICT) in the economy
Globalisation presents a challenge for statistics as well; new statistical indicators, that will enable monitoring of the process and will support formulation and execution of appropriate policies, have to be developed. Statistics on globalisation is one of the priority development areas of the European statistics.
The European Commission (Eurostat) closely co-operates with OECD, the latter having set, with its
Handbook on Economic Globalisation Indicators,
basic methodological framework for the development of this statistics. |
