Every year more than 12 million people in the world fall ill with cancer and 7.6 million people die of cancer. In Slovenia, every year more than 10,000 people fall ill with cancer and about 6,000 people die of cancer. In Slovenia the most common type of cancer in women is breast cancer and in men lung cancer. |

Disabled persons represent the largest minority in the world as according to UN and WHO data around 10% of the world’s population (more than 650 million people) are disabled. There are around 170,000 disabled persons in Slovenia and around 230,000 people with long-term illnesses. |

According to United Nations data, around 60 million people have been infected with HIV and around 27 million have already died of AIDS. In the 1999-2008 period, 258 cases of HIV infection were registered in Slovenia and 28 people died of AIDS. |

In Slovenia, in 2007 there were in hospitals nearly 362,000 hospitalizations, which is 1.35% more than in 2006. Most hospitalizations were due to cardiovascular diseases (14.6%), which represent 40% of all causes of death. |

In 2006, 529 people died by suicide in Slovenia; one every 17 hours. This figure ranks Slovenia at the very top of EU member states. As regards statistical regions, most suicides were registered in the north-eastern part of the country. |

In 2006 in the days of high temperatures 33,972 people were hospitalised due to problems with the heart and cardiovascular system and 2,909 due to chronic lung problems, of whom almost 37% due to asthma. The most vulnerable groups of population are the elderly, children and homeless people. |
