Presentation of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia: The five-minute video presents the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, its co-ordination role in the Slovene system of national statistics and its integration into the international statistical community.

Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia

Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia is the main producer and co-ordinator of carrying out programs of statistical surveys. In addition to linking and co-ordinating the statistical system, its most important tasks include international co-operation, determining methodological and classification standards, anticipating users' needs, collection, processing and dissemination of data, and taking care of data confidentiality.

The Office carries out activities of national statistics on the basis of the National Statistics Act (1995, 2001) together with authorised producers determined by the Medium-term Programme of Statistical Surveys 2008-2012. With the help of authorised producers, the Office provides to public administration bodies and organisations, the economy and the public data on the status and trends in the economic, demographic and social fields, as well as in the field of environment and natural resources.

In the scheme of organisation of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, the Statistical Office – which participates in budget discussions as an independent governmental institution – is directly responsible to the Prime Minister. Director General is appointed by the Government for the period of five years with the possibility to be re-appointed. The National Statistics Act stipulates that the Director General of the Statistical Office is autonomous regarding professional and methodological issues. Since 2003 the Director General has been Irena Križman, M.Sc.

Strategic and development questions of national statistics are discussed by the Statistical Council, which is a professional methodological advisory body and the highest representative of users and the professional public. Members of the Statistical Council are representatives of the National Assembly, the National Council, the Bank of Slovenia, employers and employees, the judiciary, experts from the field of statistics and the Statistical Office.  The current President of the Statistical Council is Ms Anuska Ferligoj, PhD, Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences.
