Revision of the European and National Classification of Activities

The Regulation (EC) No 1893/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 December 2006 establishing the statistical classification of economic activities NACE Revision 2 and amending Council Regulation (EEC) No 3037/90 as well as certain EC Regulations on specific statistical domains (hereinafter: European Regulation 1893/2006/EC), published in the Official Journal of the European Communities of 30 December 2006, is being applied as from January 1, 2008.

The European Regulation 1893/2006/EC is binding in its entirety and is directly applicable in all Member States, but it gives them the possibility to further divide the classification NACE Rev. 2 for their national needs. In practice this means breakdown of European classes (4-digit activity code) into national subclasses (5-digit activity code). The national subclasses must be approved by the European Commission in order to ensure comparable data on the European level.

The national regulation on the standard classification of activities (Official Gazette of the RS, No 69/2007, 17/2008) only supplements the European Regulation 1893/2006/EC with national subclasses. The national subclasses were defined in three inter-service consultations (in autumn 2006, in spring and autumn 2007) and were approved by the European Commission, as required by the European Regulation 1893/2006/EC. The national regulation on the standard classification of activities (the so called SKD 2008) is being applied as from January 1, 2008.

The project of the revision of the European classification of activities (known as Operation 2007) includes also the revision of the European classifications CPA (Classification of Products by Activity) and PRODCOM (PRODucts of COMmunity). The implementation of the revised classification NACE Rev. 2 (at national level SKD 2008) into statistical surveys and administrative environment is being performed in line with the timetable of Eurostat, which plans to complete the transition of all statistical domains to the new classification by 2011.

Publishing statistical data according to SKD 2008 (NACE Rev. 2)

The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS) will start publishing results of most of the statistical surveys according to NACE Rev. 2 / SKD 2008 in 2009. The plan for data dissemination has been prepared.

In the Business Register of Slovenia, which is managed by the Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Public Legal Records and Related Services (AJPES), activities of business entities have been kept according to SKD 2008 since 1 January 2008. And on its website AJPES already disseminates various data according to SKD 2008.

In early 2009 SORS will publish for the first time according to SKD 2008 various short-term indicators such as earnings, labour force, industrial production index, turnover, producer price indices, labour cost index, etc., and also the results from most of the annual surveys.
In 2010 the following data will be published for the first time according to SKD 2008:
• gross domestic product and other national accounts data,
• business tendencies,
• investment.

Time series: As regards short-term indicators (monthly, quarterly), together with the first release of data according to SKD 2008 in the SI-STAT Database recalculated (back-casted) time series will be published, mostly since 2000 inclusive.
