Personal inflation calculator

How much does your personal inflation (taking into account your expenditure) differ from the official inflation rate for Slovenia? Select your shares of expenditure by dragging the sliders.

The basket of goods and services, which the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia uses to calculate consumer price indices and thus the inflation rate for Slovenia, is made up of 660 goods and services. For each of them – e.g. bread, milk, cinema ticket, petrol – we establish prices at a monthly and annual level. The total consumer price index is calculated as the weighted average of changes in prices of all 66 goods and services in four places (Ljubljana, Koper, Maribor and Novo mesto) where prices are monitored.

However, the rate of inflation does not depend only how prices of goods and services change. Another important factor is the weights of individual goods and services. The weights determine the share of the individual good or service in the basket and thus the impact of its price on the total change, i.e. the inflation rate.

Weights used by the Statistical Office for calculating price indices (inflation rate) are determined on the basis of data collected by household budget surveys. They refer to the average consumer and as such reflect the structure of consumption of an average Slovenian household. However, the average consumer only exists in theory. Therefore, the officially calculated inflation rate can differ from your calculation of personal inflation: for example, if you don’t smoke, your personal consumption will probably not include tobacco products which are included in the basket used for calculating the official inflation rate.

Calculation of personal inflation with the calculator

The calculator enables you to calculate your personal inflation, i.e. your index of consumer prices, by dragging sliders to change weights for groups of goods and services and thus adjust them to your consumption structure.

On the basis of entered data a chart will be displayed showing the official and your calculation of price growth and thus indicating how a change in weights due to different consumption impacts the total change in prices.
