At the end of September 2006 there were 2,011,614 people living in the Republic of Slovenia.

In the third quarter of 2006 the number of population in the Republic of Slovenia increased by 3,098 (0.2%). Most of the increase (85.7%) was on account of citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, excluding citizens temporarily residing abroad (1,333 persons), and foreigners with permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia (1,323 persons).

More than 4/5 of the population growth on account of men

The number of men grew by 2,521 (81.4% of the population growth). Their distribution between the population groups was rather even. In each population group the number of men grew approximately by a third of the total increase of men.

The number of foreigners in Slovenia grew to 55,034. Almost three quarters (72.4%) of all foreigners were men.

In the third quarter of 2006 among all population groups the number of foreigners with permanent residence in Slovenia grew the most (by 4.5%). At the end of September there were 30,500 foreign citizens with permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia.

In 2006 the number of foreign women increased only on account of foreign women with permanent residence in Slovenia, as the number of foreign women with temporary residence in Slovenia declined by 13.3% between the beginning of the year and the end of September. In the third quarter of 2006 their number fell by 378 (6.6%).
