In April 2013, 7% fewer tourist arrivals and 12% fewer tourist overnight stays were recorded than in April 2012.

In April 2013 fewer foreign and domestic overnight stays

In April 2013, around 221,000 tourist arrivals and around 560,000 overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations. Compared to April 2012, in April 2013 there were 7% fewer tourist arrivals and 12% fewer overnight stays.

In the same comparison arrivals of domestic tourists and their overnight stays decreased by 2% and 6%, respectively. The number of foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays decreased by 9% and 15%, respectively.

Decrease in tourist overnight stays from the majority of the most important tourism markets

Foreign tourists created in Slovenia in April 2013 60% of all overnight stays.

Key European markets, from which the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Italy (21% of all foreign overnight stays), Austria (16%), Germany (9%), the Russian Federation (7%), Serbia (5%), Croatia (4%) and the United Kingdom (3%).

As regards the most important tourism markets, in April 2013 tourists from the majority of markets created fewer overnight stays than in April 2012: from Germany by 32%, from Italy and Austria by 21%, from the Russian Federation by 19% and from Croatia by 18%. In the same comparison tourists from Serbia made 10% fewer overnight stays and from the United Kingdom 6% fewer overnight stays.

Tourists spent most of their nights in health (spa) resorts

In April 2013, the highest number of overnight stays of all tourists was recorded in health (spa) resorts (around 202,000 or 15% fewer than in April 2012). Regarding the number of overnight stays, second placed were seaside resorts with around 126,000 overnight stays or 12% fewer than in April 2012. Mountain resorts recorded around 83,000 overnight stays, which is 9% fewer than in April 2012.

Around 92,000 bedplaces available to tourists in Slovenia

In April 2013, around 34,000 units (rooms, apartments, houses, cottages, bungalows, places for camping, moorings for boats) with around 92,000 bedplaces were available to tourists in Slovenia. This is the breakdown of bedplaces by accommodation establishments: 50% in hotels and similar establishments (motels, boarding houses, inns, overnight accommodations), 18% in camping sites, 7% in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings and 6% in apartment settlements.

Fewer tourist overnight stays in hotels

In April 2013 most of the tourist overnight stays were recorded in hotels (around 399,000 or 71% of all overnight stays), followed by camping sites (around 45,000 or 8% of all overnight stays) and apartment settlements (around 29,000 or 5% of all overnight stays). Private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings recorded around 15,000 overnight stays or 3% of all overnight stays.

Compared to April 2012, in April 2013 increases in the number of tourist overnight stays were recorded in mountain huts (by 14%) and in youth hostels (by 11%). In the same period hotels recorded 12% fewer, apartment settlements 17% fewer, camping sites 19% fewer, tourist farms with accommodation 4% fewer and private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings 3% fewer overnight stays.

Bedplaces in hotels on average 39% occupied, rooms 45%

43% of all tourist bedplaces (permanent and auxiliary) were available to tourists in hotels. Permanent bedplaces in hotels were on average 39% occupied. Rooms in hotels were on average 45% occupied (net occupancy).

Most tourist overnight stays in municipalities Piran, Ljubljana and Bled

Domestic tourists made almost a half (49%) of their overnight stays in municipalities Piran, Moravske Toplice, Brežice, Podčetrtek, Izola and Koper.

Foreign tourists made 61% of their overnight stays in municipalities Ljubljana, Piran, Bled, Rogaška Slatina, Moravske Toplice and Maribor.

In the first four months of this year fewer domestic and foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays

In the first four months of this year, around 776,000 or 3% fewer tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodations than in the same period of the previous year. In the same comparison the number of tourist overnight stays (around 2,175,000) decreased by 6%.

From January to April 2013 domestic tourists created 3% fewer tourist arrivals and 6% fewer overnight stays than in the same period of the previous year. The number of foreign tourist arrivals and their overnight stays decreased by 3% and 5%, respectively.

Methodological note
The monthly data do not cover establishments with less than 10 permanent bedplaces within the following types of accommodations: private accommodations - rented rooms, dwellings, overnight accommodations, tourist farms with accommodation and company vacation facilities. Annual data also include these establishments.
