In March 2013, 1% more tourist arrivals and 1% more tourist overnight stays than in March 2012.

More tourist arrivals and overnight stays in March 2013

In March 2013, over 205,000 tourist arrivals and over 556,000 overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations. Compared to March 2012, in March 2013 there were 1% more tourist arrivals and 1% more overnight stays.

In the same comparison arrivals of domestic tourists and their overnight stays each decreased by 8%. The number of foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays each increased by 9%.

More foreign tourists than domestic ones

In March 2013 among all tourist arrivals there were 40% of domestic tourists and 60% of foreign tourists.

Foreign tourists created in Slovenia in March 2013 54% of all overnight stays. Key European markets, from which the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Italy (23% of all foreign overnight stays), Austria (17%), Germany and Croatia (9% each) and the Russian Federation and Hungary (5% each).

As regards the important tourism markets, significant increase in overnight stays by Italian and German tourists

As regards the important tourism markets, in March 2013 tourists from Italy created 29% more overnight stays than in March 2012, tourists from Germany 23% more, from Austria 9% more, from the United Kingdom 5% more, from Croatia 3% more and from the Russian Federation 2% more. In the same comparison tourists from Serbia made 10% fewer overnight stays and from Hungary 16% fewer overnight stays.

Both domestic and foreign tourists spent most of their nights in health (spa) resorts

In March 2013, the highest number of overnight stays of all tourists was recorded in health (spa) resorts (almost 214,000 or 1% fewer than in March 2012). Regarding the number of overnight stays, second placed were mountain resorts with almost 108,000 overnight stays, which is approximately the same as in March 2012. Seaside resorts recorded around 105,000 overnight stays, which is 4% more than in March 2012. Due to foreign tourists, municipality Ljubljana, which registered 9% of all overnight stays, also recorded more overnight stays, by 7%.

Foreign tourists spent the highest share of their nights (29%) in health (spa) resorts; the same goes for domestic tourists, who spent 50% of their nights in health (spa) resorts.

Around 81,000 bedplaces available to tourists in Slovenia

In March 2013, around 31,000 units (rooms, apartments, houses, cottages, bungalows, places for camping, moorings for boats) with around 81,000 bedplaces were available to tourists in Slovenia. This is the breakdown of bedplaces by accommodation establishments: 55% in hotels and similar establishments (motels, boarding houses, inns, overnight accommodations), 11% in camping sites, 8% in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings and 6% in apartment settlements.

Bedplaces in hotels on average 39% occupied, rooms 44%

About a half, 48%, of all tourist bedplaces (permanent and auxiliary) were available to tourists in hotels. Permanent bedplaces in hotels were on average 39% occupied and in apartment settlements 26% occupied (net occupancy).

Most overnight stays in hotels, increase in the number of overnight stays significant in youth hostels, tourist farms and private accommodations

In March 2013 most overnight stays were recorded in hotels, around 408,000 or 73%, followed by apartment settlements (6% of all overnight stays) and camping sites (4% of all overnight stays). Private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings recorded almost 18,000 overnight stays or 3% of all overnight stays.

Compared to March 2012, in March 2013 a significant increase in the number of tourist overnight stays was recorded in youth hostels (by 55%), in tourist farms with accommodation (by 50%) and in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (by 19%). Mountain huts and hotels also recorded more overnight stays, by 13% and by 1%. In the same comparison apartment settlements and camping sites registered a 4% decrease in the number of overnight stays each.

Most tourist overnight stays in municipalities Piran, Ljubljana and Moravske Toplice

Domestic tourists made almost a half (49%) of their overnight stays in municipalities Piran, Moravske Toplice, Brežice, Kranjska Gora, Zreče and Podčetrtek.

Foreign tourists made 48% of their overnight stays in municipalities Ljubljana, Piran, Bled, Kranjska Gora and Moravske Toplice.

In the first quarter of this year approximately the same number of foreign tourist arrivals and 1% fewer foreign overnight stays over the same period of 2012

In the first quarter of 2013, 1% fewer tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodations than in the same period of the previous year. In the same comparison the number of tourist overnight stays decreased by 3%.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals and overnight stays decreased; domestic tourists created 3% fewer arrivals and 6% fewer overnight stays over the same period of the previous year. Foreign tourists made approximately the same number of their arrivals and 1% fewer overnight stays.

Methodological note
The monthly data do not cover establishments with less than 10 permanent bedplaces within the following types of accommodations: private accommodations - rented rooms, dwellings, overnight accommodations, tourist farms with accommodation and company vacation facilities. Annual data also include these establishments.
