In January 2013 there were 10% less tourist arrivals and overnight stays registered in tourist accommodations than in January 2012.


Fewer tourist arrivals and overnight stays in January 2013

In January 2013, almost 165,000 tourist arrivals and slightly more than 517,000 overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations. Compared to January 2012, in January 2013 there were 10% less tourist arrivals and overnight stays; domestic tourist arrivals and overnight stays decreased by 9% and 10%, respectively, while foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays decreased by 11% each.

Almost a half of foreign overnight stays were made by tourists from Croatia and Italy

Foreign tourists created in Slovenia in January 2013 58% of all overnight stays. In January 2013, the highest shares of foreign overnight stays were made by tourists from Croatia (24%), Italy (22%), Serbia and Austria (each 9%), the Russian Federation (8%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (4%) and Germany, Hungary and the United Kingdom (each 3%).

As regards the important tourism markets, in January 2013 tourists from the Russian Federation created 8% more overnight stays than in January 2012. In the same comparison tourists from Italy made 23% less overnight stays, those from Croatia and from Austria 11% less, from Germany 10% less, from Serbia 6% less and from Bosnia and Herzegovina 4% less overnight stays.

In all types of tourist resorts fewer tourist arrivals and overnight stays

In January 2013 most tourist overnight stays (40%) were recorded in health (spa) resorts, followed by mountain resorts with a 31% share and by seaside resorts and urban municipalities with an 8% share each. Municipality Ljubljana recorded 7% of all tourist overnight stays.

In January 2013 all types of tourist resorts recorded fewer overnight stays; in seaside resorts there were 17% less tourist overnight stays compared to January 2012, in health (spa) resorts 12% less, in mountain resorts 9% less and in municipality Ljubljana 3% less tourist overnight stays.

Almost a quarter of tourist overnight stays in mountain resorts made by tourists from Croatia

In January 2013, the highest share of foreign tourist overnight stays was recorded in municipality Ljubljana, 93%. Most arrivals and overnight stays were made by tourists from Italy.

In urban municipalities, mountain resorts and seaside resorts in January 2013 there were more foreign overnight stays than domestic ones. According to the number of overnight stays by foreign tourists, in mountain resorts Croatian tourists prevailed, while in urban municipalities and seaside resorts Italian tourists prevailed.

In health (spa) resorts domestic overnight stays prevailed. Among foreign tourists according to the number of tourist overnight stays Croatian and Italian tourists prevailed.

Bedplaces in hotels on average 36% occupied

In January 2013, almost 80,000 bedplaces (2% more than in January 2012) were available to tourists in tourist accommodations. About a half, 48%, of all tourist bedplaces were available to tourists in hotels, 10% in camping sites, 8% in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings and 6% in apartment settlements.

Permanent bedplaces in hotels were on average 36% occupied and in apartment settlements 31% occupied (net occupancy).

In January 2013, 70% of tourist overnight stays were registered in hotels, followed by apartment settlements (8% of all overnight stays), private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (5% of all overnight stays) and camping sites (3% of all overnight stays).

Compared to January 2012, in January 2013 the number of tourist overnight stays in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings increased by 15%, in tourist farms with accommodation by 14%, in mountain huts by 8%, etc. In apartment settlements and camping sites there were fewer overnight stays than in January 2012 (each by 21%). Hotels also recorded fewer overnight stays (by 11%).

Tourists stayed in health (spa) resorts on average four nights

On average, tourists stayed in Slovenia in January 2013 3.1 nights: domestic tourists stayed 3.2 nights and foreign tourists 3.1 nights.

Tourists from the Russian Federation stayed on average in Slovenia 7.4 nights, from the United Kingdom 4.1 nights, from Croatia 3.4 nights, from Serbia 3.2 nights, from Austria 2.9 nights, from Germany 2.7 nights and from Italy 2.6 nights.

On average, tourists stayed the longest in health (spa) resorts (3.8 nights). In mountain resorts the average number of overnight stays was 3.5 nights, in seaside resorts 3.2 nights and in municipality Ljubljana 1.9 nights.

Tourists stayed on average in apartment settlements 4 nights, in camping sites 3.6 nights, in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings 3.5 nights and in hotels 3.1 nights.

38% of all overnight stays in municipalities Kranjska Gora, Piran, Ljubljana, Brežice and Zreče

Domestic tourists made 31% of their overnight stays in municipalities Moravske Toplice, Kranjska Gora, Zreče and Piran, while foreign tourists made 31% of their overnight stays in municipalities Kranjska Gora, Ljubljana and Piran.

Methodological note
The monthly data do not cover establishments with less than 10 permanent bedplaces within the following types of accommodations: private accommodations - rented rooms, dwellings, overnight accommodations, tourist farms with accommodation and company vacation facilities. Annual data also include these establishments.
