Slightly more marriages than a year before
In 2011, 6,671 couples were married or 2.2% more than in 2010. The marriage rate was 3.3 per 1,000 population.
Most marriages took place in the spring and summer months. The greatest number of marriages was recorded in May (984 or 14.8%).
5,966 (89.4%) grooms and 6,029 (90.4%) brides were married for the first time.
Mean age at marriage on the rise
The mean age of groom was 34 years, while the bride was on average three years younger than a groom and was 31.2 years old.
The mean age of groom at first marriage was 31.4 years, while the mean age of bride has not yet reached 30 years of age; it was 29.1 years.
Every fifth marriage between Slovene citizens and foreigners
5,215 (78.2%) marriages in 2011 were between Slovene citizens (both groom and bride had Slovene citizenship).
In 693 marriages (10.4%) a groom with Slovene citizenship married a bride with foreign citizenship. There were 64 different citizenships of brides with whom Slovene grooms were married. Among those brides 62.9% were from one of the countries of ex-Yugoslavia.

2,298 divorces in 2011
2,298 divorces took place in 2011 or 5.4% less than in 2010. The divorce rate was 1.1.
There were 344 divorces per 1000 marriages. The mean age of husband at divorce was 45.2 years, while a wife was three years younger (42.1 years).
Average duration of marriage before divorce was 13.4 years
Marriages that end in divorce tend to last longer than in the past. Almost half of marriages that ended in divorce (49.8%) in 2011 lasted 15 years or more, 17.5% of marriages that ended in divorce lasted less than five years and 1% ended in divorce in the first year of marriage.
48.4% of divorces without dependent children
1,112 (48.4%) divorces were without dependent children in 2011. In the remaining 1,186 marriages that ended in divorce there were 1,836 dependent children. Most numerous were divorces with one dependent child (27.5%).
Most registered same-sex civil partnerships in 2011
In 2011, 15 same-sex civil partnerships were registered in Slovenia: 7 between men and 8 between women.
