Friday, April 20, 2012, First Release

162,800 children in basic education At the beginning of the 2011/12 school year 159,700 children were enrolled in elementary school program with regular curriculum, slightly more than 1,600 children were enrolled in elementary school program with adapted curriculum and 1,500 children were enrolled in elementary school program with special curriculum. Compulsory basic education was carried out by 785 elementary schools and their branches and by 57 schools and institutions for children with special needs education. In 2011, basic education successfully completed by more than 18,000 pupils At the end of the 2010/11 school year education in elementary schools with regular curriculum was successfully completed by 17,775 pupils, in elementary schools with adapted curriculum by 184 children and in elementary schools for adults by 256 students. 4% of all pupils in the final grade had at the end of the year an improvement exam in one or more subjects, and 87% of them successfully improved negative marks. In 2011, we had 1.4% of dropouts from basic education.
16% of all pupils learn two or more foreign languages as a mandatory curriculum subject or as an optional subject By learning foreign languages the education and training is widely opening to the world. EU's guiding principle is that in addition to their mother tongue everyone should speak two foreign languages.
In the 2010/11 school year 51% of all pupils learned one foreign language as a mandatory curriculum subject or as an optional subject and 16% learned two or more foreign languages. For the second foreign language the majority chose German, followed by English, French and Spanish. Pupils in large numbers also make use of the opportunity to learn foreign language as a facultative subject. In the 2010/11 school year 15% of all pupils used this option.
In the 2010/11 school year on average 12 pupils per teacher Within the whole basic education there were on average 12 (11.9) pupils per teacher. The number of pupils per teacher differs as to the type of program the school performs and the educational cycle. In elementary schools performing regular curriculum there were on average 12 (12.2) pupils per teacher, in elementary schools with adapted curriculum 3 (3.4) pupils per teacher and in educational institutions offering programs for adults 6 (5.6) students per teacher.
