At the beginning of the school year 2008/09, 24,000 pupils were enrolled in basic music and dance education.

At the beginning of the school year 2008/09, slightly more than 24,000 pupils were enrolled in basic music and dance education, of whom almost 20,000 were elementary school pupils

In comparison to the previous school year the number of children and youth enrolled in basic music and dance education increased by nearly 1%.

700 children were attending 1-year pre-school music education, 2,800 were attending a preparatory music and dance school and 20,600 children and youth were attending lower and upper levels of music and dance programs.

More than 1,000 children were educated in private music schools

In the school year 2008/09 there were 8 private music schools operating in Slovenia with nearly 1,100 pupils enrolled, of whom slightly over one third were attending pre-school music education or a preparatory music school. For private music schools it is characteristic that they are specialized in teaching a particular group of instruments, above all keyboard instruments and bowed string instruments.

Every third pupil learns to play keyboard instruments and every sixth learns to play woodwind instruments

The three most representative groups of instruments studied by children and youth in music schools are keyboard instruments, woodwind instruments and bowed string instruments. Among single instruments the majority of pupils are learning to play the piano, followed by the guitar, the violin, the accordion and the flute.

4,600 pupils are incorporated in school orchestras

In this school year 179 orchestra groups operate in the scope of music schools, numbering over 4,600 members. The most numerous are wind instrument orchestras (67 groups with almost 2,000 members), followed by string orchestras with 65 groups am 1,300 members, accordion orchestras with 31 groups and slightly more than 500 members and symphony orchestras with 16 groups and 800 members.

Almost 3,000 children completed the lower or upper level of music and dance programs in the school year 2007/2008

More than 2,200 pupils - of the total of almost 3,000 - completed the lower level and 700 completed the upper level of music and dance programs. The majority of pupils who completed studies at the lower level finished piano lessons and at the upper level flute lessons.

On average 13 pupils per teacher

In the school year 2007/08, more than 1,800 teachers and 60 tutors were educating 24,000 pupils. On average there were 13 pupils per teacher.
