Maritime transport, Slovenia, 2008

The Slovenian maritime carrier Splošna plovba in 2008 had 26 freight vessels, of which 21 dry bulk cargo carrying ships and 5 general cargo carrying ships. The number of general cargo carrying ships (5 ships) has not changed for many years, while the number of dry bulk cargo carrying ships is growing. The number of dry bulk cargo carrying ships went up in the five-year period (from 2004 to 2008) by 52.9%, while gross tonnage and deadweight tonnage (DWT) of these ships increased by 67.3% and 70.4%, respectively.

Our national maritime carrier carries goods only between foreign ports. In 2008 it carried 5.7 million tonnes of goods and made almost 30 billion tonne miles. Compared to 2007 the quantity of goods carried increased by 11%, while compared to 2004 it increased by 31.7%. In the same comparisons the number of tonne miles made went up by 17.4% and by 47.7%, respectively.

As regards carriage of goods between maritime regions, most of the goods were carried from the region “Indian Ocean coast, Read Sea and Persian Gulf” to the region “East Asia and Oceania” – 1.3 million tonnes (5.2 billion tonne miles made) and from the region “East Asia and Oceania” to the region “Indian Ocean coast, Read Sea and Persian Gulf” – 1.0 million tonnes (5.2 billion tonne miles made).
