Indices of industrial production and stocks, March 2009, and indices of labour productivity in industry, 2008 - provisional data

In March 2009 a small increase was observed in the production of industrial products and services; stocks also slightly increased.
In March industrial production slightly higher than in February Data show that compared to February 2009 in March 2009 industrial production slightly increased (by 0.2%). In comparison with March 2008, production in March 2009 decreased by almost 19%. The same situation appeared in the first three month of this year in comparison with the same period of the previous year; the production went down by almost 20%. Compared to February among activities the highest manufacturing Industrial production in March 2009 compared to February 2009 increased only in manufacturing (by almost 1%), while in mining and quarrying and in electricity, gas, steam, air condition supply it decreased (by slightly less than 1% and 3%, respectively). Compared to March 2008 the production fell in all three activities; in mining and quarrying by more than 10%, in manufacturing by 20%, and in electricity, gas, steam, air condition supply by almost 6%. The same fall happened if we compare the first three months of 2009 with the same period of the previous year; in mining and quarrying production decreased by 8%, in manufacturing by 21%, and in electricity, gas, steam, air condition supply by more than 4%. Industrial production compared to February 2009 also a bit higher in industrial groupings Compared to February 2009, industrial production in March 2009 increased in consumer goods industries by more than 3% and in capital goods industries by almost 1%, while in intermediate goods industries it decreased by almost 3%. Compared to March 2008 the production decreased in all three industrial groupings, the same happened also in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year. Minimum rise in the stocks of industrial products In March 2009 compared to a month earlier the stocks of industrial products increased only by 0.3%, while in comparison to March 2008 stocks increased by more than 6%. A similar situation happened in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year. Stocks of industrial products in March 2009 compared to March 2008 increased the most in mining and quarrying, by 9%, while as reagrds main industrial groupings the biggest growth was recorded in capital goods industries, by almost 14%. Labour productivity in industry in 2008 lower than in 2007In 2008 the labour productivity in industry was 1.3% lower than in 2007.

Industrial production indices, Slovenia, January 2002 - March 2009

Methodological note On 1 January 2008 the new classification of activities of business entities NACE Rev. 2, which replaced NACE Rev 1.1, came into force in all EU Member States. In the Republic of Slovenia the national version of the standard classification, called SKD 2008, which includes the entire European classification of activities but also adds some national subclasses, came into force on the mentioned date. The new classification brings many changes, which are the result of structural changes in the economy in recent years. Most of the changes thus involve market services and manufacturing. A very important change is the new structure of the classification, since there is no longer the level of subsection (2-digit code). More general information about the introduction of the new classification is available on a special website of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and you can find more detailed information about the changes in the field of mining and manufacturing statistics in Methodological Explanations at www.stat.si/metodologija.asp, where you should select Mining and manufacturing. Time series of statistical data recalculated according to the SKD 2008 will be published in the SI-STAT database ( http://www.stat.si/pxweb/Database/Ekonomsko/Ekonomsko.asp) on 13 th May 2009.
