Supply balance sheets for the market year, Slovenia, 2000 - 2007

Final trade and calendar supply balance sheets for cereals, potatoes, vegetables, rice, sugar, eggs and meat have been compiled for the 2000-2007 period on the basis of common Eurostat methodology.

On the basis of common Eurostat methodology the final crop and animal supply balance sheets have been compiled. They were prepared on the basis of provisional data for 2007.

Despite the increase in usable production of cereals and the decrease in domestic use, the degree of self-sufficiency for cereals is with 50% still low in Slovenia.

In the 2000-2007 period the usable production of cereals fluctuated, reaching approximately 530,000 tons in 2007. Self-sufficiency increased due to the decrease in domestic use. Even though it amounted to almost 56%, the degree is still quite low. The share of the domestic use for human consumption amounted during the whole period to approximately one quarter of the total domestic use.

The degree of self-sufficiency of meat ranged around 90% between 2000 and 2007.

In the whole period the quantity of gross indigenous production slightly fluctuated at around 170,000 tons. The domestic use of meat, which is all used for human consumption, was stable and it amounted to approximately 190,000 tons. Due to relatively stable gross indigenous production, the degree of self-sufficiency stayed high.

On average the degree of self-sufficiency is higher for animal products than for crop products; in Slovenia the degree of self-sufficiency is especially low in vegetable supply balance sheet.

In the whole period the lowest degree of self-sufficiency was demonstrated by supply balance sheets for vegetables and potatoes. It amounted in 2007 to 33% for vegetables and to 69% for potatoes, which increased after 2006.
