Print version

In the calendar year 2008, 17,221 students graduated from vocational colleges and higher education institutions, two thirds of them are women.

In 2008 the number of new graduates from tertiary education exceeded 17,000 again

Over 9,000 people finished the 1st cycle of higher education, which includes[1] higher vocational education, professional higher education (former) and professional and academic higher education (1st Bologna cycle). 6,655 students completed the 2nd cycle of higher education, which includes Master education (2nd Bologna cycle), specialization after professional higher education (former) and also former academic higher education. 1,419 students graduated with a “Magisterij” of science (former) degree or a Doctorate of science (former or 3rd Bologna cycle) degree and therefore finished the 3rd cycle of higher education.

As in previous years, graduates in the fields of social sciences, business and law are in the majority – they represent a half of all tertiary education graduates. 71% of all graduates in this group are women. The fewest graduates are in the fields of science, mathematics and computing, and agriculture and veterinary – only slightly over 1,000 (6.5% of all graduates).

When observing the changes in the number of new graduates through years, we can see around 6,000 graduates per year in the 1980s and a noticeable increase each year after 1994. Compared to 1996 the number of graduates has doubled, compared to the years before 1990 even tripled.

13,786 students graduated in higher education institutions

This number is very similar to the number of graduates in the previous year. Two thirds of all higher education graduates have taken a degree at the University of Ljubljana. More than 3,000 graduates finished their studies at the University of Maribor, 861 at the University of Primorska and 51 at the University of Nova Gorica. The total number of graduates at all universities has decreased compared to 2007. On the other hand, the number of graduates at single higher education institutions has increased and climbed over 1,000 for the first time.

In the fourth year after the amendments in the higher education legislation that launched a harmonization of all study programs with the Bologna declaration 826 new graduates finished new Bologna-compliant study programs and joined the 697 earlier ‘Bologna’ graduates. In 2008 first ‘Bologna’ Doctorates of science were awarded.

In 2008 more than 3,400 students graduated at vocational colleges

The number of graduates at vocational colleges is constantly increasing. In 2008 more than 3,400 students graduated from higher vocational studies, 20% more than in the previous year. While male graduates are evenly distributed between different fields of education, 80% of female graduates finished their studies in the study programs for accountant, business secretary and commercialist.

[1] In 2009 we started to classify education outcomes (publicly verified educational attainment, etc.) and education activities (education programs) by the new Classification System of Education and Training – KLASIUS. More information on our website: www.stat.si.
