Upper secondary education for youth and adults, Slovenia, the end of the school year 2007/2008 and the beginning of the school year 2008/20092008/2009

At the end of the school year 2007/2008 there were 88,630 students (youth) and 14,568 adults enrolled in upper secondary educational programmes.
More than 40% of young students enrolled in general or professional gymnasiums In the last few years we have observed that the enrolment in general and professional gymnasiums keeps increasing and has in the school year 2007/2008 reached 41 %. More and more young students decide to continue schooling after successfully finishing upper secondary education with a national matura which gives possibilities for the enrolment in popular tertiary programmes. Passing a professional matura allows the enrolment in higher professional colleges and some programmes at the universities. Most pupils finish gymnasium programs, most adults finish technical and vocational programs Among 21,762 pupils who finished education, 38% finished gymnasums, slightly fewer (29%) passed professional matura at technical and professional schools and 20% passed the final exam in middle vocational programs. Most of the adults finished technical and professional programs (34%), while 30% finished vocational technical programs and the same percent finished middle vocational programs. Upper secondary schools for youth have a prominent place in adult education Among the institutions that organize adult education for achieving upper secondary education are mostly units of upper secondary schools for youth; nearly half of them have units for adult education. About 30% of adult education in the school year 2007/2008 was provided by folk universities, while special organisations for adult education, which play a major part in non-formal education, are here represented in a smaller part. Enrolment in lower and middle vocational programmes is declining At the beginning of the school year 2008/2009 there were 87,501 students (youth) enrolled in upper secondary educational programmes, most of them in gymnasiums and technical and other professional programmes. The number of students enrolled in lower and middle vocational programmes is declining, while in the last three years there have been no differences in PTI programmes and in vocational courses or the matura course.
