Student Enrolment in Tertiary Education in the Academic Year 2008/09– FINAL DATA
Monday, April 20, 2009, First Release
In the academic year 2008/09, 114,391 students are enrolled in tertiary education studies
36% men and 58% women between 19 and 24 years of age are involved in tertiary education In this academic year 114,391 students are enrolled in tertiary education, which is less than in the previous year. The lower number of students is not the result of lack of interest but instead is a direct consequence of a less numerous generation. Even though decreasing, the share of population involved in tertiary education is still at the same level as last year. The share of young people who decide to continue their education after they finished upper secondary education and the share of those who decide to continue education once they graduated from higher undergraduate studies is still increasing. In this academic year almost a half of all people aged 19 to 24 are involved in tertiary education.
Slightly more than 16,000 students enrolled in higher vocational studies In recent years the number of higher vocational colleges has increased as has the number of students enrolled in these colleges. In this academic year for the first time after several years we did not record an increased number of students enrolled in higher vocational colleges. The number of all students enrolled in 56 higher vocational colleges is 16,263, which is 1% less than in the previous year. 40% of students are enrolled in full-time programs. Also in this academic year students are mainly interested, mostly women, in programs for business secretaries, economists and commercialists, while men are more interested in the technical fields, the most interesting are programs for mechanical engineering and mechatronics. Increase in the number of students who continue studies after graduating from higher undergraduate studies In the academic year 2008/09, 98,128 students are enrolled in higher education studies at universities and single higher education institutions with concession; 60% of them are women and 1,822 are foreign students. 87,356 [1] students are enrolled in higher professional and university study programs to obtain first higher education diploma, which is a little less than last year. The number of students who continue studies after graduating from higher undergraduate studies increased again; this time by 14% over the previous academic year. The increase is the result of the introduction of and enrolment in second Bologna cycle programs. As a year before, the most interesting programs are in the fields of social sciences, business and law in all higher education study programs. As many as 37,261 higher education students are enrolled in these programs, which is two fifths of all students. More and more interest in studying at single higher education institutions with concessionIn recent years the number of single higher education institutions with concession offering publicly verified higher education programs has been increasing and so has the number of students at these institutions. While the total number of students decreased by almost 2% in comparison with last year, the number of all students at single higher education institutions with concession increased by as much as 12%. 7,266 students are enrolled in these institutions, which is 7% of all students of higher education programs. Two thirds of them study full time. One third of students are involved in Bologna-compliant professional higher and academic higher education studies In this academic year 35.790 students are enrolled in professional higher and academic higher education studies harmonized with the Bologna declaration, which is a third of all students enrolled in all higher education studies. In the academic year 2008/09 all 1st year higher education students of the University of Nova Gorica and of 16 single higher education institutions with concession are enrolled in study programs harmonized with the Bologna declaration. Another two uniform master education (2nd Bologna cycle) study programs have been introduced Compared to the academic year 2007/08, universities and single higher education institutions with concession have established many new higher education studies harmonized with the Bologna declaration. In this academic year another two uniform master education (2nd Bologna cycle) study programs were introduced. The Faculty of Pharmacy and the Veterinary Faculty in Ljubljana joined the Faculty of Architecture and offered uniform master education (2nd Bologna cycle) study programs, which replaced the previous »long« (9 or 10 semesters) academic higher education studies. In this academic year 759 students are enrolled in uniform master education (2nd Bologna cycle)study programs. [1] Included are students of 2nd degree uniform master study programs.
