Print version

Final data show that in 2007 EUR 500.5 million was spent on research and development in Slovenia, which was 1.45 % of gross domestic expenditure.

In 2007, 790 more people worked in R&D than a year before

In 2007 there were 14,311 persons in paid employment in R&D, of whom 5,541 or 38.7 % women. Most of the persons in paid employment in R&D were researchers (8,742 or 61.1 %). The highest share of researchers was recorded in the higher education sector (3,623 or 41.4 %), followed by the business sector (2,901 or 33.2 %), the government sector (2,194 or 25.1 %) and the private non-profit sector (24 or 0.3 %).

Expressed in full time equivalent (FTE), there were 10,369 persons involved in R&D, which was 573 people more than a year before

How much time persons in paid employment actually work in the field of R&D is expressed by the full time equivalent (FTE). We use this approach in order to avoid underestimating or overestimating the data on persons engaged in R&D.

Expressed in FTE there were 10,369 persons involved in R&D in 2007 (of whom 3,824 or 36.9 % women), among them 6,250 (60.3 %) researchers, 3,089 (29.8 %) technicians and 1,030 (9.9 %) other personnel.

In 2007, 1.45 % of GDP was spent on R&D (gross domestic expenditure on R&D as percentage of GDP is calculated on the bases of revised GDP on 24 September 2008)

In 2007 EUR 500.5 million was spent on R&D in all four sectors, which is EUR 16.2 million more than a year before. The highest share among sources of funding R&D was represented by funds from enterprises (EUR 291.6 million), followed by government funds (EUR 178.2 million), funds from abroad (EUR 28.8 million), funds from higher education institutions (EUR 1.8 million) and funds from private non-profit institutions (EUR 0.062 million).

Most money for R&D was spent in the field of engineering and technology

The highest share of gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) in 2007 was represented by engineering and technology (EUR 220.9 million or 44.1 % of GERD), followed by expenditure for medical sciences (EUR 127.3 million or 25.4 % of GERD). The least was spent for agricultural sciences (EUR 17.4 million or 3.5 % of GERD).

In 2007, 54.2 % of total funds was earmarked for R&D in industrial production and technology

In 2007 EUR 271.4 million (54.2 % of total funds) was spent on research and development in the field of industrial production and technology. In the business sector the share was 81.2 % of total gross domestic expenditure on R&D in this sector and in the private non profit sector 65 %. The government sector and the higher education sector earmarked most of the funds for non-oriented research.
