Population by settlements, detailed data, Slovenia, 30 June 2008
Thursday, February 12, 2009, E-Release
In mid-2008 almost a quarter of the total population of Slovenia lived in the seven largest settlements with more than 20,000 residents. The population of Ljubljana represented 12.9% of the total population of Slovenia.
Almost half of all settlements with fewer than 100 people
At the end of June 2008 there were 6,029 settlements in Slovenia. Most of them, 2,927 or 48.5%, had fewer than 100 inhabitants; less than 7% (6.6%) of the total population lived in such settlements. In mid-2008 57 settlements were unpopulated, three more than in December 2007: Rogla in municipality Zreče, Brič in municipality Koper/Capodistria and Šmaver in municipality Nova Gorica.
Largest absolute population growth registered in Ljubljana
24.8% of the total population of Slovenia lived in seven settlements with more than 20,000 residents (Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Kranj, Velenje, Koper and Novo mesto). Between December 2007 and June 2008 the total population of the seven largest settlements grew by 4,181 or 0.8%. The largest share of this growth happened in Ljubljana with 2,966 (1.1%) more people living there in June 2008 than at the end of 2007.
The majority of cases of large relative population growth were recorded in smaller settlements. The largest relative increase in the number of population was recorded in Zgornje Danje in municipality Železniki: in the first half of 2008 its population grew from one to four, i.e. by 300%.
The largest absolute decline in the population that cannot be attributed to secessions of parts of settlements was recorded in Slovenj Gradec; at the end of June 2008 there were 64 people fewer living there than in December 2007. Besides the settlements that became unpopulated in the first half of 2008, the largest relative decrease in the population happened in Križni Vrh in municipality Mokronog - Trebelno, by 67.4% or 29 persons.
The data on the population of Slovenia by settlements are published on the Statistical Office of the Republic Slovenia’s website (the SI-STAT data portal). The data refer to 30 June 2008 and are available by five-year age groups and sex.
