Time series of data on territorial units and house numbers at the level of municipalities, statistical regions and cohesion regions have already been published in the SI-STAT database. They are now completed with annual and quarterly data as of 31 December 2008.

Situation as of 31 December 2008

On 31 December 2008 there were 12 statistical regions, 210 municipalities, 6,028 settlements, 8,384 statistical districts, 17,387 spatial districts, 10,085 streets and 526,129 house numbers registered in the Register of Spatial Units.


Changes in 4th quarter 2008

In the fourth quarter of 2008 there were territorial changes of settlements in municipality Maribor (in the Podravska statistical region). The settlement Košaki (2.1 km2) joined the settlement Maribor and stopped existing as an independent settlement.

Settlements Kobilje, Odranci and Trzin at the same time also municipalities

As regards the number of settlements, municipality Krško (in the Spodnjeposavska statistical region) ranked first with 157 settlements and Trebnje (in Jugovzhodna Slovenija) second with 153 settlements. Municipalities Kobilje and Odranci (in the Pomurska statistical region) and Trzin (in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region) each had only one settlement.

64 municipalities with no street system


On the reference date Ljubljana (in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region) was the only municipality in Slovenia with more than 1,000 streets (15% of all streets in Slovenia) and was far ahead of Maribor (in the Podravska statistical region) (8.7% of streets in Slovenia). Only five other municipalities had more than 200 streets. The lowest number of streets (4) was registered in municipality Sveti Jurij (in the Pomurska statistical region). As many as 64 municipalities were composed of settlements with no street systems, most of them (34%) in the Podravska statistical region.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, 25 new streets were registered in Slovenia (13 in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region and 12 in the Podravska statistical region), 1 was cancelled and 1 was renamed.

As regards the area, municipality Kočevje was the largest


As regards the area, municipality Kočevje was the largest with 555.4 km2; it coverd 21% of the total area of Jugovzhodna Slovenija. Municipality Odranci as the smallest municipality in Slovenia was about eighty times smaller. It coverd 0.5% of the total area of the Pomurska statistical region.

Increase in the number of spatial districts, the number of statistical districts unchanged

Between 30 September 2008 and 31 December 2008, 4 new spatial districts were established in Slovenia in 2 municipalities (Ajdovščina and Benedikt).

Largest increase in house numbers in municipality Ljubljana

In the fourth quarter of 2008 the number of house numbers increased the most in municipality Ljubljana (by 82), followed by municipalities Maribor (68), Slovenska Bistrica (55) and Zreče (39). The number of house numbers decreased in municipalities Dobrepolje (15), Škofja Loka (9), Jesenice (3), Oplotnica (2) and Sevnica (1).

Over 2,000 house numbers changed

In the fourth quarter of 2008, 2,203 house numbers were changed in the Register of Spatial Units; 1,596 of these were assigned as new, 203 were cancelled and 404 were renumbered.

Data on territorial units and house numbers by cohesion regions are also completed with data for the last quarter in 2008

The larger cohesion region in terms of area Vzhodna Slovenija (12,212 km2) is on the third level additionally divided into 8 statistical regions: Pomurska, Podravska, Koroška, Savinjska, Zasavska, Spodnjeposavska, Jugovzhodna Slovenija and Notranjsko-kraška. It also has more than two thirds of all municipalities in Slovenia. The smaller cohesion region Zahodna Slovenija (8,061 km2) includes 4 statistical regions: Osrednjeslovenska, Gorenjska, Goriška and Obalno-kraška and has only 64 municipalities.
