Population, Slovenia, 30 September 2008

Friday, January 30, 2009, First Release

At the end of September 2008 there were 2,053,740 people living in the Republic of Slovenia, 1,024,361 men and 1,029,479 women. In the first nine months of 2008 the population grew by 1.4%.

Population of Slovenia is still increasing

In the first three quarters of 2008 the population of Slovenia increased by 23,637 men and 4,237 women. In the same period, the number of citizens of Slovenia, excluding those temporarily residing abroad, increased by 1,281 men and 353 women.

The number of foreign citizens in Slovenia again higher

There were 94,861 foreign citizens residing in Slovenia at the end of September 2008. Foreigners with registered temporary residence prevailed; in the third quarter of 2008 their share grew from 59.3% to 64.0%. In the third quarter of 2008 the number of foreigners with registered permanent residence grew by 1,245 reaching 34,119.

The number of men almost reaching the number of women

At the end of September 2008, there were 5,218 more women than men living in Slovenia. Three months earlier this difference was 14,845 and at the end of December 2007 24,618. This gap between the number of women and men has narrowed mostly due to foreigners with registered temporary residence, among whom the share of men is 83.6% (83.3% at the end of June 2008, 81.2% at the end of December 2007); the share of women among foreign citizens with registered permanent residence has increased slightly in the first nine months of 2008 (to 32.5%); in other population groups the ratio between men and women has remained the same in this period.

Central Population Register as the sole source of population data

In the third quarter of 2008 the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia switched to the Central Population Register as the sole source of population data, which means that SORS no longer receives separate data on foreigners in the Republic of Slovenia from the Register of Foreigners. The use of the Central Population Register means that data are of a better quality and more up-to-date. The data source change is reflected in a larger registered number of foreigners who, as per methodology in use from 1995 on, are counted among population as soon as they register residence, regardless of the intended time of stay in Slovenia.
