On 31 December 2006 there were 2,010,377 people living in Slovenia, 11.3% of them were born outside the country.
Half of the working age population were persons in employment Out of 2,010,377 people living in our country on 31 December 2006 70.1% were of working age (aged 15–64), half of them (56.9% or 802,331) persons in employment.
Most persons in employment in manufacturing At the end of 2006 the highest share of persons in employment in Slovenia, born in Slovenia, were employed in manufacturing (28.4%). Manufacturing activities employed also most persons in employment born in European countries which are not EU member states (27.2%), while most persons in employment born outside Europe still worked in hotels and restaurants (22.9%).
Among persons in employment the highest educated were born outside Europe Most (58.2%) of the persons in employment in Slovenia at the end of 2006 had upper secondary education. Highly educated people (15.9%) were more numerous than people with basic education (15.0%). Education of persons in employment in Slovenia importantly varies according to country of birth. Highly educated were 17.1% of persons in employment born in Slovenia, 28.7% of persons in employment born outside Europe, 20.1% of persons in employment born in other EU member states and 7.3% of persons in employment born in European countries which are not EU member states.
Almost a quarter of immigrants working in low-skill jobs At the end of 2006, 10.4% of persons in employment in Slovenia were employed in elementary occupations. According to country of birth, these occupations employed 24.0% of persons in employment born abroad and 8.3% of persons in employment born in Slovenia.
Unemployment of people born in one of the former Yugoslav republics lasted longer than unemployment of people born in Slovenia The share of unemployed people born in one of the former Yugoslav republics who were unemployed for less than a year was at the end of 2006 again lower than the share of unemployed people born in Slovenia, but as a rule people born in one of the former Yugoslav republics wait for employment longer than people born in Slovenia.
Majority of students enrolled in vocational colleges and undergraduate and post-graduate educational programs were born in Slovenia Of the people living in Slovenia at the end of 2006 who enrolled in vocational colleges and undergraduate and post-graduate educational programs in the academic year 2006/2007, 96.6% were born in Slovenia, followed by students born in European countries which are not EU member states (2.5% of enrolled students), most of them born in Bosnia and Herzegovina (42.4%).
Three quarters of foreigners immigrated with the purpose of employment and seasonal work In 2007, 29,193 people immigrated to Slovenia; 27,504 (i.e. 94.2%) of them were foreign citizens and 1,689 were nationals. Most of the foreign immigrants came to Slovenia with the purpose of work and employment (55.1%), followed by people who immigrated with the purpose of seasonal work (22.5%) and those who came for family reunification (17.4%).
More than two thirds of immigrants in 2007 got employed Among immigrants in 2007, 19,666 got employed in the observed year; most of them (41.3%) in craft and related trades and 39.2% in elementary occupations. Among 1,689 nationals who immigrated to Slovenia in 2007 only 16% (274) got employed in the observed year; most of them in wholesale, retail, certain repair and in manufacturing.
More than half of immigrants in 2007 who found employment had basic education Among persons in employment who immigrated to Slovenia in 2007 again the majority had basic education (54.3%), 40.7% had secondary education, while 3.0% had short-term tertiary education or more. The share of persons in employment with short-term tertiary education or more was among immigrants in 2005 6.3% and in 2006 3.7%.
Construction employed almost two thirds of persons in employment who immigrated in 2007 As many as 63.9% of persons in employment who immigrated in 2007 found employment in construction. People employed in construction were followed by people employed in manufacturing (12.7%): 70.4% of people employed in this activity found their job in manufacture of metals and fabricated metal products. Since 2005 the construction business has been employing on average almost 65% of persons in employment who immigrated to Slovenia annually.
