Friday, December 19, 2008, First Release
According to survey results for 2007, 6% of the households could not afford a car, 13% of the households could not afford an adequate meal every second day, and 32% of the households could not afford paying for one week annual holiday away from home.
Housing conditions and problems in the neighbourhood
With the problems such as leaking roofs, damp walls/floors/foundation or rot in window frames or floors were faced 18% of all households, which is 4 percentage points less than in 2006. In apartments with not enough daylight lived 10% of households and the majority of them (95%) could afford an adequately warm house.
As in 2006, the biggest problems in the neighbourhood in 2007 were pollution, crime or other environmental problems as reported by 21% of all households. One fifth of households were faced with noise from neighbours or from the street; one tenth of households had problems with crime, violence or vandalism in the area where they lived.
Financial capabilities of households
Unexpected financial expenses (up to EUR 440) could be handled by 56% of households, while week annual holiday away from home could be from the financial perspective afforded by 68% of households in Slovenia. 87% of households could afford to have a meal with meat, chicken, fish (or vegetarian equivalent) every second day; the breakdown by type of household shows that in this case the lowest share was among one-person households, namely 78%.
As regards the ability of households to make ends meet, 22% of households shared the opinion that they made ends meet with great difficulty or with difficulty; and 2% very easily.
Financial burden of the housing costs and debts
For 31% of households the total housing costs in 2007 represented a heavy burden to the households, for 56% somewhat a burden and for 13% of households these costs were not a burden at all. In 2007, 30% of households had hire-purchase instalments or other non-housing loan payments. Among all households 4% had arrears on repayments of debts, for 11% those repayments of debts represented a heavy burden.
General health of respondents
In the questionnaire were included also some questions about the general health of the selected respondents. It has been noticed that the most common answer (42%) to this question was “good”; 16% of residents thought that their general health was very good, 28% fair, 11% bad and 3% very bad.
Additional questions on housing and accessibility of basic needs
In 2007 the majority of dwellings was adequately equipped and suitable for living. The most common problem was the warmth during the summer (21% of households thought that their dwelling was not comfortably cool during the summer). 88% of households expressed overall satisfaction with their dwellings.
Regarding the perception of accessibility to the physical access to basic services, whereas the opening hours were also taken into account, the least accessible was the primary health centre where first aid could be achieved or the general practitioner. One fourth of the households considered health care as accessible with great or some difficulty. The most accessible appeared to be compulsory school as 86% of the households with children in their schooling age thought that school was easily or very easily accessible.
Possession of consumer durable goods in households (in %), Slovenia, 2007 Note: because of rounding, the totals do not add up.
