Print version

Saving in the household sector also in 2007 largely exceeded households’ investments and thus provided financing to the other resident sectors.

Most value added was created by the non-financial sector
Most value added in Slovenia (on average 58% in the 2000-2007 period) was created by non-financial corporations, while much less (20%) was created by household production activities. The general government sector created on average 17% of value added.

On average more than 68% of national income is passed on to households
Most value added created in the corporate and government sectors is passed on to households in the form of wages and salaries and employers' social contributions. The vast majority of gross national income is thus accrued to the household sector. Subsequently, it is somewhat reduced through the redistribution of income by means of taxes, net social insurance payments, and other transfers, which are largely paid to the government.

Saving in the household sector also in 2007 largely exceeded households’ investments and thus provided financing to the other resident sectors
In the 2000-2007 period, gross fixed capital formation by non-financial corporations and by the general government exceeded saving (plus net capital transfers received), meaning that these sectors were net borrowers. Saving in the household sector in the entire 2000-2007 period largely exceeded households’ gross fixed capital formation. Households thus provide financing to the other resident sectors and to the rest of the world, mostly through financial corporations. These institutions mainly act as financial intermediaries and have a (relatively small) financial surplus in the 2000-2006 period.

Financial corporations are net borrowers for the first time
In 2007 financial corporations have debt for the first time, which is a consequence of euro introduction. The Bank of Slovenia started to pay into the reserves of the European Central Bank. In the balance of payments this amount is recorded as interests to the rest of the world.

The household saving rate exceeded EU-27 and Euro area average also in 2007
In the 2000-2007 period the household saving rate in Slovenia was above the EU-27 average. In comparison with the Euro area average the situation was the same, only in 2003 the household saving rate in Slovenia (14%) was bellow the Euro area average (14.5%).

Methodological remark
Because of methodological revision of BDP, published in September 2007, revised non-financial sector accounts for the 2000-2006 period are published.
