Highest growth in the Podravska region

Highest growth in the Podravska region

Measured by the GDP per capita index, compared to 2005 the Podravska region improved its position with regard to the Slovenian average the most, by 1 percentage point (from 83.5 in 2005 to 84.5 in 2006), and the Zasavska region deteriorated its position the most, by 2.6 percentage points (from 70.6 to 68.0).

Differences among regions small

In 2006 GDP per capita ranged from 66.2% of the Slovenian average in the Pomurska region to 144.3% in the Osrednjeslovenska region.

The differences among regions are small in comparison to other EU countries. In 2005 only five countries had smaller regional differences than Slovenia, and 18 had larger. More about this can be found on Eurostat's website, which assigns the "Dispersion of regional GDP per inhabitant" figure (higher figures indicate larger differences) 22.4 to Slovenia, and for instance 24.2 to Italy, 25.1 to Austria, 34.9 to Croatia, and 40.0 to Hungary.

Commuters influence GDP per capita

It should be noted, however, that in some regions the GDP per capita figures can be significantly influenced by commuter flows. Net commuter inflows in these regions push up production to a level that could not be achieved by the resident active population on its own. The result is that GDP per capita can be overestimated in these regions and underestimated in regions with commuter outflows.

GDP, and thus GDP per capita, provides a measure of the total economic activity in a region. It may be used to compare the degree of economic development of regions. GDP does not measure the income ultimately available to private households in a region.

Half of national GDP in two regions

The differences in regional sizes are large. Two regions alone (Osrednjeslovenska and Podravska) produce half (49.5%), and Osrednjeslovenska alone more than a third (36.1%) of the total national GDP.
