Provisional data show that in 2007 EUR 528,7 million was spent on research and development in Slovenia, which was 1.53 % of gross domestic expenditure.

In 2007, 1,058 more people worked in R&D than a year before

In 2007 there were 14,579 persons in paid employment in R&D of whom 5,630 or 38.6 % women. Most of the persons in paid employment in R&D were researchers (8,984 or 61.6 %). The highest share of researchers was recorded in the higher education sector (3,741 or 41.6 %), followed by the business sector (3,025 or 33.7 %), the government sector (2,194 or 24.4 %) and the private non-profit sector (24 or 0.3 %).

Expressed in full time equivalent (FTE), there were 10,726 persons involved in R&D, which was 930  people more than a year before.

How much time persons in paid employment actually work in the field of R&D is expressed by the full time equivalent (FTE). We use this approach in order to avoid underestimating or overestimating persons engaged in R&D.

Expressed in FTE there were 10,726 persons involved in R&D in 2007 (of whom 3,868 or 36.1 % women), among them 6,450 (60.1 %) researchers, 3,166 (29.5 %) technicians and 1,110 (10.4 %) other personnel.

In 2007, 1.53 % of GDP was spent on R&D (gross domestic expenditure on R&D as percentage of GDP is calculated on the bases of revised GDP on 24 September 2008).

In 2007 EUR 528.7 million was spent on R&D in all four sectors, which is EUR 44.3 million more than a year before. The highest share among sources of funding R&D were funds from enterprises (EUR 319,1 million), followed by government funds (EUR 178.4 million), funds from abroad (EUR 28.4 million), funds from higher education institutions (EUR 2.7 million) and funds from private non-profit institutions (EUR 0.062 million).

Most money for R&D was spent in the field of engineering and tecnology.

The highest share of gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) in 2007 was represented by engineering and technology (EUR 241.8 million or 45.7 % of GERD), followed by expenditure for medical sciences (EUR 118 million or 22.3 % of GERD). The least was spent for agricultural sciences (EUR 17.8 million or 3.4 % of GERD).
