Population, Slovenia, 30 June 2008

Thursday, October 30, 2008, First Release

In mid-2008 there were 2,039,399 people living in Slovenia, 1,012,277 men and 1,027,122 women. In the second quarter of 2008, the population of Slovenia grew by 0.5%.

The number of citizens grew
After six months of decrease, the number of citizens of Slovenia, excluding those temporarily residing abroad, again grew in the second quarter of 2008 by 1,110 men and 960 women. The number of all citizens of the Republic of Slovenia increased slightly as well.

Increased number of foreigners
The majority of the increase in total population of Slovenia was due to foreign citizens. The number of foreigners living in the country rose to 80,831. Foreigners with temporary residence in Slovenia contributed the largest share in this 12.1-percent increase. The ratio between men and women among them has leaned even further towards men who in mid-2008 represented 83.3% of all foreign citizens with temporary residence in Slovenia and 76.9% of all foreigners in Slovenia.

More women than men
Despite the rather large increase in the number of men mostly due to foreign citizens with temporary residence in Slovenia, the number of women living in Slovenia on 30 June 2008 was still larger than the number of men. Women represented 50.4% of the whole population, which is 0.2% less than three months earlier.
