Print version

Regional data on compensation of employees are published for the first time. In 1999-2006 over 30% more compensation of employees was paid in Zahodna Slovenija than in Vzhodna Slovenija.

Regional data on compensation of employees are published for the first time according to the Common Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS). NUTS has three hierarchical levels: NUTS 1 level represents Slovenia as a whole country, at NUTS 2 level the country is divided into two cohesion regions – Vzhodna Slovenija (Eastern Slovenia) and Zahodna Slovenija (Western Slovenia) and at NUTS 3 level cohesion regions are broken down into 12 statistical regions. In this publication we publish data at NUTS 2 level.

In Zahodna Slovenija the share of compensation of employees increased compared to Vzhodna Slovenija
Share of compensation of employees in Zahodna Slovenija in 1999-2006 was up from 55.4% in 1999 to 57.6% in 2006. The growth was mostly due to increase in three groups of activities. In the group Whole sale and retail trade, hotels and restaurants, transport and communications in Zahodna Slovenija increased by 2.3 percentage points, in the group Financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities by 1.7 percentage points and in Other services by 2.1 percentage points. In the entire period 30.4% more compensation of employees was paid in Zahodna Slovenija than in Vzhodna Slovenija.

Regional differences also in the structure of compensation of employees by groups of activities
Major regional differences were recorded in the group Mining, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply and in the group Financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities. While in the first group in Vzhodna Slovenija compensation of employees represented (dependent on year) at least 37% of total compensation of employees in the region, the share in Zahodna Slovenija remained below 25%. In the group Financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities the situation was reversed. The share of compensation of employees in Vzhodna Slovenia was below 12%, while in Zahodna Slovenija in 2006 the share came close to 20%.

Some common characteristics in both regions
Characteristic for both regions in 1999-2006 was that the share of compensation of employees in Mining, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply decreased, while the share of Financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities increased. No mayor changes were noticed in other activities. Another similarity between regions was the growth of compensation of employees. In Zahodna Slovenija the growth was slightly higher, but in both regions the highest growth (mostly over 10% a year) was recorded in 2000-2002. In the past few years the growth has slowed down.

Influence of commuters flow
Compensation of employees can be calculated from two aspects – from the aspect of the payer and from the aspect of the recipient of compensation of employees. The results from both methods can differ because the headquarters of the payer and the place of living of the recipient can be in different regions. In this publication data are published from the aspect of the payer. Data calculated from the aspect of the recipient are published in the publication »Household accounts by region«.
