Wednesday, October 15, 2008, First Release
In 2007, 8,685 adults were convicted and 459 juveniles were imposed an educational measure or a sentence. Due to an error in detailed data on for 2006, we are publishing them again in the SI-STAT database. We apologise for the inconvenience.
The most frequent criminal offence in 2007 was larceny; among adults the seventh most frequent criminal offence was causing of traffic accident through negligence In 2007 most of the criminal offences committed by adult and juvenile perpetrators were against property, against life and limb, and against public order. The most frequent criminal offences among adult perpetrators were larceny (over 14% convictions), fraud (10%) and grand larceny (8.6%). Among the top ten criminal offences committed by adult perpetrators seventh placed is causing of traffic accident through negligence with almost 5% of all convictions in 2007. As regards juvenile perpetrators, most measures or sentences were given for larceny (21.35%), grand larceny (21%) and actual bodily harm (less than 9%). Among adults the most frequent sentence was prison sentence and among juveniles supervision by a social assistance authority As in the previous years, in 2007 too the most frequently imposed sentence among adults was prison sentence (90% of cases), followed by fine (7%). Almost 77% of adult perpetrators were given a suspended prison sentence. More than half of juvenile perpetrators were given the sentence of supervision by a social assistance authority. Men aged 30-39 the most frequently convicted Almost 90% of convicted adult perpetrators of criminal offences are men, while among convicted juveniles the share of men is even higher (95%). Women thus represent just over a tenth of convicted adults and around 5% of convicted juveniles. Criminal proceedings are not getting any shorter The chart shows that for adults criminal proceedings from the criminal charge to the final judgement are not getting much shorter. For several years the share of cases that are not concluded within a year has been by far the highest and no downward trend is in sight.
