Higher production of milk on farms in 2007

Data for 2007 collected with the sample survey conducted in December
The data are the result of the sample survey conducted in December 2007 on 9,000 farms and production and utilization of milk was monitored on a subsample of 1,500 farms. We have also used data from the milk quota system from the Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Agricultural Markets and Rural Development.

In 2007 more cow’s milk than a year before
In 2007, 666,472 tons of cow’s milk was produced, which was 3.8% more than in 2006. Cows were milked on more than 25,000 farms, but less than 9,000 farms marketed their milk.

Dairies also in 2007 bought more milk from farms than a year before
In 2007 the largest part (79.6% or 530,374 tons) of cow’s milk produced on Slovene farms was collected by dairies (Slovene and foreign).

The share of cow’s milk intended for animal feed higher than in 2006
Although the share of cow’s milk used as feed for animals has been gradually decreasing in recent years it increased again in 2007. In 2007, 14.8% (98,329 tons) of milk was used as feed (in 2006 the share was 14.1%).

The quantity of drinking milk also lower than a year before
The quantity of drinking milk from farms has also been decreasing. In 2007 the quantity of drinking milk from farms decreased by 7.5% compared to 2006. The quantity of drinking milk for home consumption decreased by 6.3% and direct sales of milk decreased by 10.2%.

Less milk used for producing milk products
The quantity of milk which is used for the production of milk products decreased again in 2007 (by 7.4%). The most common milk products are cheeses. In 2007, 4,143 tons of milk was used for the production of cheese on farms. From this milk 414 tons of cheese was produced (of which 206 tons of curd).

More goat’s milk and also more ewes’s milk
In 2007, 1,412 tons of goat’s milk (4.9% more than in 2006) and 418 tons of ewes’ milk (5.3% more than in 2006) were produced on Slovene farms.

Methodological note

Data on the quantity of cheese produced were revised (we used a more accurate coefficient for hard and semi-hard cheese).
