In 2007 lower production of freshwater fish than in 2006.

Fish farming and sport fishing in inland waters

In 2007 freshwater fish farmers bred and removed about 1,038 tons of freshwater fish. Fish farms produced and sold 961 tons of fish products, while ponds for commercial recreational fishing contributed additional 76 tons. The total production was down by 12% compared to 2006.

A good deal lower warmwater fish production was the result of floods in the last year and still more it was caused by different construction works near the rivers and lakes with fish farms. Low prices of imported fresh fish also had an influence on the reduction of coldwater fish production.

Sport fishing catch amounted to about 195 tons and it was 2% lower than in 2006.

Persons in employment in freshwater fishing

In 2007, 195 persons were engaged in the economic activities of fresh water fishing. Only 73 persons were in full-time engagement. The number of 130 annual work units (AWU) in 2006 decreased to 123 AWU in 2007.

Due to the increase of the number of annual work units in mariculture the total labour input in aquaculture in 2007 (143 AWU) was down only by 2 percentage points compared to 2006.
