Rail infrastructure
The railway network in the Republic of Slovenia consists of 1,228 km of railway lines, of which 330 km of lines are double tracks and 503 km are electrified. Slovenian Railways possesed 277 tractive vehicles, 168 of them were locomotives, 109 railcars, 371 passenger vehicles and 3,979 freight wagons. There were 522 freight wagons in private property.

Rail goods transport
In 2007 over 17.5 million tonnes of goods were carried by train and over 3,600 million tonne-kilometres were performed. Compared with 2006, the railway goods transport increased by 3.1%, expressed in tonnes, and by 6.8%, expressed in tonne-kilometres.

More than 80% of goods were carried in the international transport. There has been a remarkable growth of transit in the last two years. In 2007 there were carried 3.8 thousand tonnes of goods in transit and performed 878 million tonne-kilometres, which is almost 13.3% growth, expressed in tonnes, and almost 9.5% growth, expressed in tonne-kilometres, compared to 2006. Compared to 2005 the growth is even bigger, namely 20.6%, expressed in tonnes, and 12.4%, expressed in tonne-kilometres.

Considering the type of goods most machinery, transport equipment, manufactured articles and miscellaneous article were carried by train (28.0%, expressed in tonnes, and 24.5%, expressed in tonne-kilometres), and ores and metal waste (18.3%, expressed in tonnes, and 22.2%, expressed in tonne-kilometres). Third most carried type of goods were agricultural products and live animals. They represented almost 13.9% expressed in tonnes, and 14.1%, expressed in tonne-kilometres.

In the period 2004-2007 more than 1.5 million tonnes of dangerous goods were carried by train yearly. The quantity of carried dangerous goods decreased in 2007 by 3.1 %, although the share of flammable liquids increased to 82.9 %, which is 4.5 % more percentage points than in the year before.

Rail traffic accidents
There were 61 railway accidents in Slovenia in 2007 in which 17 people lost their lives. Compared with 2006 8 persons more died. In 2007 in railway accidents 30 people were seriously injured, which is 19 people more than in the year 2006. Among 17 fatalities there were no passengers or employees. Among 30 seriously injured there were one passenger and 6 employees.
