Print version

There were over 1,287,000 vehicles registered in Slovenia in 2007, of which 1,256,000 motor vehicles and 31,000 trailers.

One car per two persons

At the end of 2007 there were more than 1,014,000 passenger cars (excluding special passenger cars) registered in Slovenia. This is equivalent to 501 cars per 1000 population. If we take into account only passenger cars used by natural persons (962,000), 475 passenger cars were registered in Slovenia per 1000 population.

The largest increase was recorded for motorcycles

Compared to 2006, 4% more road vehicles were registered at the end of 2007. In this period the number of road motor vehicles increased by 5%, while the number of trailing vehicles decreased by 7%. The largest increase in this comparison was recorded for motorcycles (90%). This difference is not due to a large increase in 2007 but to underestimated figures in previous years. Until 2007 a large number of motorcycles were registered only during the summer months because of lower costs of insurance and road tax. In 2007 a much smaller number of reported temporary removals of motorcycles from the register were recorded due to changed conditions of insurance. Another reason for a smaller number of reported temporary removals from the register was the mild winter and longer season for using the motorcycles. Actual increase in the number of motorcycles can be estimated when comparing data for June 2007 and June 2006. In this comparison a 25% increase was recorded. A large fictitious increase in the number of motorcycles did not have a big influence on the increase in the total number of vehicles since motorcycles present less than 3% of all registered road vehicles. Passenger cars had the largest influence on the total number of registered vehicles. Their number increased by 3%. The number of mopeds increased by 9%, the number of busses by 2% and the number of goods motor vehicles by 11%.

Inactive vehicles

In March 2006 new database for register of road vehicles was established. The previous version of register contained a large number of inactive agricultural tractors, agricultural trailers and caravans, which were transferred to the new register. All of these inactive vehicles had lost the status of registered vehicle after one year if registration for them was not extended. Because of this the number of registered agricultural tractors decreased by 7%, the number of registered agricultural trailers by 33% and the number of registered caravans by 40%. Inactive vehicles, which were transferred to the new register, were present in other categories of vehicles also. However, their number in those categories was negligible.

The total number of trailing vehicles decreased by 9% in 2007 in comparison with 2006 because of previously mentioned reasons. Comparing only the change in the number of registered goods trailing vehicles an 13% increase was recorded.

26% of vehicles registered for the first time in Slovenia were old

In Slovenia almost 130,000 cars were registered for the first time, of which 74% vehicles were new and 26% vehicles were old. 72% of vehicles registered for the first time in Slovenia were in use by natural persons.

The number of first registrations increased in 2007 in all categories compared to 2006 except for busses. In 2007, 6 busses less were registered than in 2006. This presents a decrease of 2%. Large growth in the number of first registrations was recorded for vehicles with purpose other than transport of passengers and goods. Thus the number of service vehicle increased by 55% and the number of special passenger cars by 29%. The increase of first registrations of goods vehicles was also high. The number of lorries increased by 19%, road tractors by 33%, trailers by 39% and semi trailers by 26%. In addition to the large growth of the number of motorcycles, the number of mopeds also increased heavily (by 29%). The number of passenger cars registered for the first time in Slovenia increased in 2007 by 16% compared to 2006.

Share of passenger cars using diesel is still increasing

The share of passenger cars that used diesel to power their engines was 27% at the end of 2007. This share was 3 percentage points larger than in 2006. 72% of vehicles used petrol and less than 1% used alternative types of fuels.
