Labour force, Slovenia, January 2008
Tuesday, March 18, 2008, First Release
In January 2008 the labour force numbered 936,580 persons, which is 0.4% more than a month before. The number of persons in employment also increased – by 0.3% reaching 867,342.
In January 2008 the number of persons in employment increased again After a short interruption in the growth of the number of persons in employment in December 2007, the number increased again in January 2008 due to a higher number of women in employment, which has risen by 1%. The number of men in employment fell by 0.2%. The vast majority of persons in paid employment (91%) were still employed by legal persons while individual private entrepreneurs represented 53% of the self-employed persons. The number of persons in employment was the highest in services In January 2008 almost half a million persons in employment worked in services, which is 57.6% of all persons in employment; 37.6% of persons in employment worked in industry and 4.8% in agriculture. The number of registered unemployed persons slightly increased again in January 2008 In January 2008, 69,238 unemployed persons - 32,382 men and 36,856 women - were registered at the Employment Service of Slovenia. Compared to a month before, the number of registered unemployed men went up by 2.1%, and the number of registered unemployed women by 0.4%. Still, compared to January 2007, the number of registered unemployed persons was lower by 13.4%. The registered unemployment rate in January 2008 went up by 0.1 of a percentage point and thus returned to the level of October 2007. It was 7.4%; 6.2% for men and 8.9% for women. The comparison of registered unemployed persons by age shows that more than half (53.4%) of registered unemployed persons were over 40 years old. Because unemployed persons in this age group are less likely to get a job, it is not surprising that the percentage of long-term unemployed persons (50.1%), those who are unemployed for at least 12 months, is almost the same.
