GDP per capita in 2005 ranged from 67% of the Slovenian average in Pomurska region to 144% in Osrednjeslovenska region

GDP per capita in 2005 ranged from 67% of the Slovenian average in Pomurska region to 144% in Osrednjeslovenska region

Compared to 2004 Koroška region improved its position the most, measured by GDP per capita, in comparison to the Slovenian average (its GDP per capita index rose by 1.6 percentage points: from 76.5 in 2004 to 78.1 in 2005). Spodnjeposavska, Obalno-kraška, Goriška, Savinjska, Jugovzhodna Slovenija and Osrednjeslovenska follow in decreasing order. Gorenjska, Zasavska, Podravska, Notranjsko-kraška and Pomurska region deteriorated their position, ordered from least to most.

Commuters influence GDP per capita

It should be noted, however, that in some regions the GDP per capita figures can be significantly influenced by commuter flows. Net commuter inflows in these regions push up production to a level that could not be achieved by the resident active population on its own. The result is that GDP per capita can be overestimated in these regions and underestimated in regions with commuter outflows.

GDP, and thus GDP per capita, provides a measure of the total economic activity in a region. It may be used to compare the degree of economic development of regions. GDP does not measure the income ultimately available to private households in a region.

Two regions above the Slovenian average and ten below

Only two regions are, measured by GDP per capita, above the Slovenian average (Osrednjeslovenska and Obalno-kraška), and the remaining ten are below. This imbalance is due to great differences in region sizes, especially of the Osrednjeslovenska region, which is larger than one third of the whole Slovenia (36%) measured by GDP per capita.
