Print version

In Slovenia there are 22.409 small agricultural units engaged in substantial farming. The production value of small agricultural units in 2006 amounted to EUR 10 mio or 0.9% of the value of the agricultural production.

Small agricultural units (units under the threshold of an agricultural holding) have on disposal 2,722 hectares of agricultural land and 15,658 hectares of forest

There are 22,409 small agricultural units (under the threshold of an agricultural holding) engaged in substantial farming. They have on disposal 2,722 hectares of agricultural land. About one third of the area is arable land, about two thirds of area are land under permanent crops: extensive growing of fruit trees, grapes, olives. Every small agricultural unit has also on disposal on average 70 ares of forest. All calculations refer only to the production of agricultural products because the forestry activity is in whole incorporated in agricultural accounts for forestry.

Production of small agricultural units, valued in production prices, amounts on average to about EUR 450 or about EUR 2,000 per annual work unit (AWU) per year

Annually, a small agricultural unit produces on average about 290 kg of different kinds of fruit (the most important ones are apples, pears, plums, cherries), 160 kg of potato, 100 kg of cereals, about 90 litres of wine, 84 kg of vegetables (the most important are different kinds of salads, tomato, different kinds of cabbage), 7 kg of dried pulses, 2 litres of olive oil. On average it rears 2 hens, every third small agricultural unit rears a pig, every tenth a sheep and keeps bee hives. Every small unit produces on average 200 eggs and 2 kg of honey.

Small agrucultural units produce and consume the products themselves or give them to their friends; market production is negligible

Most of the small units consume agricultural products for self sufficiency of their own household or give them to their relatives or friends. Market production presents so small a share that it can be regarded as negligible.

In the production of small agricultural units there are included 5,019 annual work units; most of these small units declared the pension as the basic income in 2006

The time used for the production differs in various time periods. From May to October one person per small unit works on average 11 hours per week, in the period from November to April s/he works on average 6 hours per week. Most of the units declared the pension as the basic income source. Because of that it is concluded that the substantial production is the additional source that helps mainly the pensioners make their living.
