Print version

The probability of having a road accident is the highest in a settlement with a street system, in October, on a Friday and at 3 p.m.

Between 2003 and 2006 the greatest number of road traffic accidents happened in settlements with street systems, while the greatest number of accidents resulting in death happened on regional roads where vehicle speeds are higher.
In this period the greatest number of accidents happened in October (the old Slovene name for October is vinotok, which could loosely be translated as “wine pouring month”). On the other hand, most accidents resulting in death happened in the summer months of July and August.
As regards days, Friday is the day when most accidents happened, while Saturday is the day when most accidents resulting in death took place.
As regards the hours of the day, 3 p.m. was the most dangerous as regards the total number of accidents (it seems that the “rush hour” in Slovenia is still quite early), while most accidents resulting in death happened between 5 and 6 p.m.

The number of road traffic accidents resulting in death is falling much slower than the total number road traffic accidents

Compared to 2003, in 2006 the total number of road traffic accidents (resulting in death, injury or material damage) fell by almost a quarter. However, the number of accidents resulting in death was only 4% lower than in 2003. This means that in spite of safer vehicles, the death rate on roads in Slovenia is growing. In 2003 one person died per 170 road traffic accidents, while in 2005 and 2006 the rate was 1 per 121.
