Area of arable crops, Slovenia, 2007 – PROVISIONAL RESULTS

At annual level larger only areas of industrial plants
In the structure of field crops for 2007, compared to a year before the greatest increase was recorded in the areas of industrial plants (by 22.5%), while the areas of root crops and pulses decreased the most (by 53.6% and 40.2%, respectively).

Areas of wheat and spelt smaller
According to provisional data collected with the Farm Structure Survey, in 2007 farmers in Slovenia sown slightly larger areas with cereals than a year before (by 1.6%). As regards the areas of stubble cereals, the areas of wheat and spelt, which are the most important cereals in our country, decreased by 1.3% compared to 2006, while the areas of barley and triticale increased by 8.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Grain cereals include grain maize; the areas of grain maize, which is the most widely sown crop in Slovenia, were slightly larger (by 0.9%) than last year.

Areas of fodder peas smaller
Data on the areas of dried pulses show that compared to 2006 dried pulses were sown on 40.2% less areas, which was mostly due to smaller areas of fodder peas (by 43.1%).

Areas of potatoes also smaller
Because in Slovenia sugar beet is no longer produced, total areas sown with root crops in 2007 were a half smaller than a year before. This group of crops includes potatoes, the areas of which were 9.3% smaller than in 2006.

Areas of industrial plants larger
Compared to a year before, the areas of industrial plants increased the most, by 22.5%. The greatest jump was recorded in the areas of oil turnip rape (by 88.4%). One of the most important industrial plants in Slovenia is hops; this year hops plantations were slightly larger (by 4.3%) than last year.

Areas of fodder from arable land area also larger
Compared to a year before, the areas of fodder from arable land increased by 1.7%.
