In 2006 the most intensive migration changes since 1994 were recorded in Slovenia. 20,016 people immigrated to the country and 13,749 people emigrated abroad. Net migration in 2006 was 6,267 persons.

The most intensive migration changes since 1994

In 2006 Slovenia recorded the most intensive migration changes since 1994. 20,016 people immigrated to the country, 18,251 of them were foreigners and 1,765 were citizens of the Republic of Slovenia.

13,749 people emigrated abroad; 11,046 of them were foreigners and 2,703 were citizens of the Republic of Slovenia.

In comparison with the previous year the number of immigrants rose by 33.1 percentage points and the number of emigrants by 59.8 percentage points.

Net migration in 2006 was 6,267 persons - 169 less than in 2005.

The highest number of immigrated foreigners arrived with the intention of employment or seasonal work

In 2006 too, most of the foreigners who immigrated to Slovenia came with the intention of employment or seasonal work (together 74.1% of all foreign immigrants).

Among foreigners who immigrated to Slovenia 85.3% were citizens of ex-Yugoslav Republics

In Slovenia a constant annual increase of immigrated citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia and Montenegro has been recorded since 2000.

In 2006 too, most of the 18,251 foreign citizens who immigrated to Slovenia were citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (7,871) and Serbia and Montenegro (4,447).

In comparison with 2005 the number of immigrated citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina rose by 82.7 percentage points and the number of immigrated citizens of Serbia and Montenegro by 33.8 percentage points.

In comparison with the previous year, we also recorded a slight increase in the number of immigrated foreigners-citizens of EU-25. In 2006, 1,339 of them immigrated to Slovenia. Due to the significant increase in immigrated citizens of third countries, citizens of EU-25 represented a smaller percentage of immigrated foreigners than in 2005 (7.3%).

More than four fifths of immigrated foreigners were men

Among foreign citizens who immigrated to Slovenia men have noticeably outnumbered women since 1995. In 2006, among immigrated foreigners 80.7% were men and 19.3% were women.

For the seventh consecutive year more citizens of Slovenia emigrated abroad than immigrated to Slovenia

In 2006 net migration of Slovene citizens was the most negative in the last four years. 938 more citizens of Slovenia emigrated abroad than immigrated to Slovenia. A positive net migration was for the seventh consecutive year recorded only among foreigners. Its value was 7,205.

Since 2000 most of the citizens of Slovenia who immigrated to Slovenia have come from Germany. That was the case also in 2006 (262 or 14.8% of all immigrated nationals). 10.0% of them returned from Croatia and 9.6% from Austria.

In 2006, 2,703 Slovene nationals emigrated abroad, which is almost a third more than in the previous year. The highest number of them emigrated to Germany (19.6%) and Austria (17.4%).

Increase in internal migration

In 2006, 38,501 changes in the settlement of permanent residence were registered by the citizens of the Republic of Slovenia. The most frequently they moved to another municipality (68.7%); the rest 31.3% were migrations to another settlement within the same municipality.

In comparison with the previous year, in 2006 the number of internal migrants increased by 19.6 percentage points.
