In March 2012 monthly inflation at 1.0%, annual inflation at 2.3%.

In March 2012 consumer prices on average 1.0% higher


In March consumer prices were on average 1.0% higher than in the previous month. In the first three months of this year they grew by 1.0% (in the same period last year by 0.7%).

On average, goods prices went up by 1.6% while service prices went down by 0.3%. As regards goods, semi-durable and non-durable goods prices went up by 9.4% and 0.5%, respectively, while durable goods prices went down by 0.3%.


Higher prices of clothing and footwear, and petroleum products

In March prices increased in the following groups: clothing and footwear (on average by 14.1%), transport (by 1.0%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 0.5%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 0.4%), restaurants and hotels (by 0.2%), and food and non-alcoholic beverages, and health (each by 0.1%).

As expected, due to the end of discounts and the arrival of the new spring-summer collection, the prices in the group clothing and footwear increased the most. Clothing prices grew by 14.8% and footwear prices by 14.0%.

In the group transport, the highest price increase was recorded in the subgroup motor cycles and bicycles (by 3.7%), followed by fuels and lubricants (by 3.1%) and passenger transport by road (by 1.6%); on the other hand, the prices of second-hand motor cars decreased the most (by 1.3%).

The price increase in the group alcoholic beverages and tobacco was the result of higher prices of wine (by 2.4%) and beer (by 1.0%).

In March the prices went up noticeably in the subgroups sports equipment (by 15.2%), liquid fuels (by 2.7%), and bread and cereals (by 2.4%).

Higher prices of clothing and footwear pushed the inflation up by 0.9 of a percentage point and petroleum products by 0.2 of a percentage point, while higher prices of bread and cereals and of sports equipment each added 0.1 of a percentage point as did all other increases together.


Only few decreases in March

In March prices decreased in the following groups: communication (by 1.1%), furnishing, household equipment and maintenance (by 0.7%) and recreation and culture (by 0.3%).

In the group communication the prices of telephone and internet services went down by 1.2%, while the prices of telephone and other equipment went up by 0.8%.

In the group furnishing, household equipment and maintenance the prices of household textiles decreased the most (by 3.6%), followed by household appliances (by 1.3%) and glassware, tableware and household utensils (by 0.9%). On the other hand, the prices of carpets and other floor coverings and the prices of tools and equipment for house and garden increased by 0.9%, each.

The decrease in the group recreation and culture was the result of lower prices of recording media for picture and accessories (by 3.8%), package holidays (by 2.6%) and recreational and sport services (by 1.4%). On the other hand, the prices of sports equipment increased the most (by 15.2%).

In March the prices went down noticeably in the subgroup fruit (on average by 5.3%)

Lower prices of fruits, furnishing, household equipment and maintenance, telephone and internet services, and package holidays pushed the inflation down by 0.1 of a percentage point, each.


Annual inflation at 2.3%

In March the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.3% (in the same period last year 1.9%), while the 12-month average price growth was 2.0% (in the same period last year 1.9%).

In one year prices increased the most in the groups alcoholic beverages and tobacco, and housing, water, electricity, gas and other (each by 4.7%), followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (by 4.0%), transport (by 3.3%), restaurants and hotels (by 2.1%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 1.9%), education (by 1.2%), furnishing, household equipment and maintenance (by 0.8%), recreation and culture (by 0.4%) and health (by 0.1%). In one year prices decreased on average in these groups: communication (by 2.4%) and clothing and footwear (by 1.2%).

In comparison with March last year, goods and service prices went up by 2.9% and 0.9%, respectively. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices increased by 5.2%, while durable and semi-durable goods prices decreased by 2.3% and 1.2%, respectively.


Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, prices in March 2012 also went up by 1.0%. The annual price growth decreased to 2.4% (the same as last year), while the 12-month average price growth was 2.1% (last year 2.2%).

Goods prices went up by 1.6%, while service prices went down by 0.1%. As regards goods, semi-durable and non-durable goods prices grew by 10.0% and 0.5%, respectively, while durable goods prices fell by 0.2%. In one year goods prices went up by 3.1% and service prices by 1.2%.

In March, compared to the previous month, prices increased the most in the group clothing and footwear (by 15.9%), followed by transport (by 1.3%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 0.4%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 0.3%), restaurants and hotels (by 0.2%) and health (by 0.1%). On the other hand, prices decreased in the groups communication (by 1.0%), household equipment and maintenance (by 0.6%) and recreation and culture (by 0.3%).

In one year prices increased the most in the groups transport, and housing, water, electricity, gas and other (each by 4.7%), followed by alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 4.4%), food and non-alcoholic beverages (by 3.6%), miscellaneous goods and services, and restaurants and hotels (each by 2.3%), education (by 1.5%) and furnishing, household equipment and maintenance (by 0.6%). Lower prices were recorded in the groups communication (by 2.7%), clothing and footwear (by 1.8%), recreation and culture (by 0.5%) and health (by 0.2%).

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in February 2012 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.7% (the same as in January), while in the EU-27 it was 3.0% (in January 2.9%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Sweden (1.0%) and the highest in Hungary (5.8%); in Slovenia it stood at 2.8%.
