In 2010 there were 22,254 people in care or proteges in old people's homes, special social welfare institutions and centres for protection and training, a little less than 70% of them women.
Number of people in care or proteges Compared with the previous year, in 2010 the number of people in care in old people's homes increased by around 3%. Among people in care in old people's homes women represented almost 70%. In the observed year special social welfare institutions were taking care of 2,511 people, which is less than 1% more than in the previous year. Women represented approximately half of people in care. In 2010 there were 3,077 proteges in centres for protection and training, which is 1% more than in the previous year. The share of women in centres was over two fifths.
Age structure of people in care or proteges Most of the people in old people's homes were over 80 years old. In 2010 their share was over 60% and further increased compared to the previous year. In 2010 people in care in the age group 50-59 predominated in special social welfare institutions (they represented almost one fourth), followed by people aged 80 or more and those in the age group 40-49 (each group represented about 15%). Most proteges in centres for protection and training were in 2010 under 45 years old (they represented a little less than 80%), among them the age group 26-35 predominated with a 40% share.
