Organic farming, Slovenia, 2009 - final data

The number of agricultural holdings with organic farming keeps increasing, but the number of newly registered agricultural holdings in conversion showed a downward trend

In 2009 the number of agricultural holdings with organic farming increased by slightly less than 4%. The number of newly registered agricultural holdings keeps decreasing and was in 2009 more than half lower than a year before.

Utilised agricultural area with organic farming represents a small and slowly increasing share of total utilised agricultural area

Utilised agricultural area with organic farming in 2009 increased slightly and still covers only slightly more than 5% of total utilised agricultural area. By far the largest share remains in the category permanent grassland (slightly more than 8% of total grassland), followed by orchards (slightly more than 7% of total orchards). The area of vegetables and strawberries increased from slightly less than 3% in 2008 to slightly more than 3% in 2009. The largest increase was recorded in the area of olive groves (from about half a percent to slightly less than 3% of all olive groves).

The shares inside agricultural area with organic farming in 2009 did not change much compared to 2008. The largest share remained in the category grassland (close to 90%). Arable land represented slightly more than 9%, orchards represented about 2% and vineyards less than 1% of total utilised agricultural area with organic farming. The share of area for cultivation of vegetables and strawberries remains below 1%. Even with a considerable increase in the area of olive groves, the size is still so low that it represents less than 1% of the agricultural area with organic farming.
