Livestock slaughter, Slovenia, 2009 - final data
Thursday, June 24, 2010, First Release
We are publishing data on livestock slaughter ‘out of slaughterhouses’ (other slaughtering) and livestock slaughter ‘in slaughterhouses’. Data refer to 2009.
Besides data on livestock slaughter ‘in slaughterhouses’, we are publishing annual data for livestock slaughter ‘out of slaughterhouses’ (other slaughtering)
Data are published in three tables: data on ‘total livestock slaughter’, on livestock slaughter ‘out of slaughterhouses’ (mainly domestic livestock slaughter on family farms) and on livestock slaughter ‘in slaughterhouses’. Data were collected with regular statistical surveys conducted by the Statistical Office. Some data which could not be collected by surveys were estimated. Data on slaughter of livestock ‘in slaughterhouses’ were already published. In comparison with 2008 in 2009 data on livestock slaughter ‘out of slaughterhouses’ show that the number of slaughtered poultry increased by about 64%, of sheep by about 4% and of goats by about 1%, while the slaughter of pigs decreased by about 16%. We did not register any slaughter of cattle ‘out of slaughterhouses’. The presented data of ‘total livestock slaughter’ show very similar trends in changes in slaughter of pigs. Similar changes in the same comparison were also noticed by the weight of animals slaughtered ‘out of slaughterhouses’. Sheep and goats are mostly slaughtered ‘out of slaughterhouses’, poultry mostly ‘in slaughterhouses’
The majority of sheep and goats are slaughtered ‘out of slaughterhouses’. The number of sheep slaughtered ‘in slaughterhouses’ decreased by about 6%, while the number of slaughtered sheep in ‘total slaughter’ (which includes slaughter ‘in slaughterhouses’ and ‘out of slaughterhouses’) increased at the annual level by more than 3%. A very similar situation is with the slaughter of goats, where only few goats at the annual level are slaughtered ‘in slaughterhouses’. Slaughter of poultry is mainly conducted ‘in slaughterhouses’, which is why even a noticeable increase in slaughter ‘out of slaughterhouses’ has no impact on the drop in poultry slaughter in ‘total slaughter’ by about 1%. Slaughter of bovine animals is strictly done in slaughterhouses. Similar changes in the same comparison were noticed also by the weight of slaughtered animals in ‘total livestock slaughter’. Detailed data are available on the SI-STAT portal. Table 1: Livestock slaughter, Slovenia, 2009

Methodological note 'Slaughter out of slaughterhouses' (other slaughtering) is mainly estimated by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS). Data of slaughtering in smaller slaughterhouses are acquired from Veterinary Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (VARS). Data of bovine slaughter are acquired from Bovine Administrative Register (BAR) which is kept by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food (MAFF).
