COMMENT
For several years Slovenia has been recording a drop in the number of marriages. The reason for this could be in the rise of the number of consensual unions. On average, 8,200 marriages were registered in the 1990s. In 2004 the number of marriages was 6,558, with 5,922 brides and 5,897 grooms marrying for the first time. The mean age at first marriage was 30.3 years for grooms and 27.8 years for brides.
With the drop in the number of marriages in Slovenia the number of divorces has been rising. Nowadays every third marriage ends in divorce. In 2004, 2,411 couples divorced. In 57% of families the divorcing couple had at least one dependent child. A third of marriages that ended in divorce lasted more than 20 years.
