Publishing data in euros

The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia publishes data in the leading currency of the period: until 31 December 2006 in Slovene tolars and from 1 January 2007 on in euros.

For information, time series data for previous years, expressed in tolars and published in the SI-STAT Database, are converted into euros according to the methodology adopted by the Euro-coordination, led by the Bank of Slovenia and the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, the Board of Governors of the Bank of Slovenia and the Statistical Council of the Republic of Slovenia. The methodology recommends two approaches to converting time series: using the fixed exchange rate, which preserves the index time series and is intended for analyses for Slovenia, and using the current average monthly, quarterly or annual exchange rate, which is intended for international comparisons.

Adopting the euro, the index time series are not broken because this is not a change in the methodology of data collection. The series simply continue.

Use of converted time series

For macroeconomic analyses in Slovenia we propose the use of fixed exchange rate conversion – in this case indices and growth rates remain unchanged. This presentation enables comparison within the country through time and provides the preservation of the same development indicators expressed in growth rates.

For international comparisons of time series originally prepared in the national currency, we propose the use of conversion with current average monthly, quarterly or annual exchange rate. In this conversion of time series it is not possible to preserve both the characteristics of time series (e.g. growth rates) and international comparability (e.g. purchasing power).

Use of the national euro, known as »2007 SIT euro«
For macroeconomic analyses in the country, for stock and flow categories the division of all time series by the irrevocably fixed SIT/EUR exchange rate is used. Time series converted in this way are labelled “denominated in 2007 SIT euro”

Use of the international euro
Time series before euro adoption are converted according to the SIT/EUR exchange rate for the period from 1 September 1999 to the entry into the euro area and according to the SIT/ECU exchange rate for the period before 1 September 1999. The categories of stocks are converted according to the exchange rate on the last day of the observed time unit, while categories of flows are converted according to the average exchange rate in the observed time unit (e.g. month, year, quarter).

Rounding and decimal places
The published data are rounded to euro, except data on:

  • earnings (monthly earnings per person in paid employment at two decimal places, monthly and annual earnings per hour paid at two decimal places),
  • prices (at three decimal places, e.g. petrol prices, at four decimal places, e.g.electricity and gas prices according to the Euro Adoption Act),
  • personal and household expenditure (at two decimal places for smaller expenses).

Release of data in publications and on the website

In publications data in the leading currency and after conversion will be shown in two tables: simultaneous presentation of data in different currencies will only be possible in the SI-STAT Database, always equipped with proper methodological explanations.
