Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, was established in 1953 and is situated in Luxembourg. It is one of the Directorates-General (DG) of the European Commission. Eurostat provides European statistical data by using the harmonized methodology that enables comparison and harmonization between countries and regions. It doesn’t collect data. This task is carried out by national statistical authorities of the Member States.
Since 1st October 2004 Eurostat provides free of charge access to all its databases and electronic publications on its Internet site; 24 hours a day, seven days a week and in three languages: English, Germany and French.
Within the project European Statistical Data Support it set up a network of support centers in nearly all Member States as well as in some EFTA countries. Their mission is to provide help and guidance to Internet users of European statistical data.
Eurostat website is updated daily. All data and information can be accessed as an unregistered user. Registration only provides a tool for users with more sophisticated requirements providing enhanced functionalities of the databases, e-mail alerts, etc.
Eurostat devotes great attention to protection of data and copyright. Reproduction is authorized, use and publication of data is allowed provided the source is acknowledged.
